Goals that can be pursued in co-operation with a coach or counselor include:
- awakening and strengthening the ability to make meaningful decisions and to act according to one's goals even in difficult and stressful situations
- increasing one's communication skills
- learning to recognize and critically reflect on one's own conduct and point of view
- broadening one's perspective
- developing new concepts of behavior
The Coach
- supports the client's goals as well as the path the client has chosen to achieve these goals
- is a highly qualified counselor with a high degree of critical awareness and a strong expertise in dealing with a variety of different relationship issues
Overall Framework and Conditions
- the relationship between the coach and the client is based on mutual respect and appreciation
- the coach listens actively and intently to what the client has to say
- the coach recognizes the client's full autonomy and independence in the decision-making process; his or her main task consists in providing
alternative ways of interpretation and behavior for the client and of pointing out obvious consequences of the client's decisions.
- the coach has to be able to explain and justify his or her behavior and advice at all times
- the coach sees the larger context and the complex connections that exist between things
- the coach reflects on his or her counseling in regular exchange with other counselors (supervision) and constantly works on increasing his or her experience and knowledge
